Today we are announcing the end of Flash support in CMS Budo.

With this announcement, we will withdraw a feature in CMS Budo that allows its users to upload Flash animation header for your website. This change will come into effect from 15th June 2015 onwards.

This change will affect to all those users who are still using Flash animation banner on their website. We will get in touch with all such users personally and help them migrate to either image header or jQuery animation header.

Why this change?

Back in 2008 to 2012 Flash was still the best option for animated banners and other contents of the website. Stunning animated effects was difficult to design with Javascript or HTML 5. During those years, Smartphone penetration was also none or very low. People were mostly accessing web using desktop or laptops. But in recent all this have changed.

Now over 60% or more people access web through smartphones and tablets. For business, it becomes necessary to have a website that is optimized for a seamless user experience on every device. This change in user habits even forced Google to bring change in their search algorithm and make it mobile friendly.

The problem with Flash is that it works very slow and consume a lot of battery life. Flash is also not supported on Apple devices like iPhone and iPad. In many cases on other platforms and browsers also one needs to download Flash plugin. As more and more people are using their mobile devices to access web, developers are using less or virtually no Flash animation in their development.

Even Adobe also decided to reconsider its Flash development policy, in its official announcement, Danny Winokur, Adobe's VP and general manager of interactive development, wrote, "HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively. This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms."

Flash is insecure, now and then new exploits for Flash show up routinely. Back in 2011, Adobe admitted Flash is a developmental dead end, especially for mobile.

Last but most important reason for us to bring this change is that even Google's guidelines for mobile friendly website suggested to avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash.
