Today I wish to talk about the software that helped us to run all operations smoothly when we are seating on the same floor, and even now when we seat remotely.

After a long gap this morning, I was seating uninterrupted and going through all threads in MyProject - a project management system developed by Shimbi Labs.

 

I felt amazed so much incredible work happens across the whole organisation that I'm not involved in at all these days. It's really extraordinary. I feel very proud and privileged to work with so many talented folks at Shimbi Labs. 

 

It was very different from the early days of the company. Though we were always different in culture than usual software companies in India, but still, many things were similar. It was a culture of top-down order: not many but some approvals. People needed to tell what to do. That was sick.

 

Today things are so different - we are individual driven, remote team company. Every member in Shimbi Labs know what is right for the organisation and they have complete authority on their work. 

 

But I will save that transformation story for some other day. Today I wish to talk about the software that helped us to run all operations smoothly when we are seating on the same floor, and even now when we seat remotely.

 

Early in 2005, just after Shimbi Labs started its operation, we were engaged in a large project from well know company in Japan. The plan was to build the web-based tool for connecting  30 + domestically and globally located branches of the company to connect, collaborate and publish their monthly magazine.

 

We were super excited about the project. It took off well, but over a period, we lost in communication and translation. We completely missed one of the most critical modules only to realise at the time of delivery. It was a shameful moment for us. 

 

On discussion with the client, we found we lead to this situation because the entire project was managed through email communication, which was the biggest mistake. Project completed with mutual understanding, but we decided to stop and first work on a collaboration and project management tool.

 

MyProject Born!

However previously, we used to use emails as primary media of communication and some times chatrooms. That was a complete mess, and all information was always scattered. In MyProject, all things have their place - when we need something, and we know where to look.
